Laid Back 12-Bar Blues Shuffle in G – Improvisation

Here’s a laid back 12-bar blues shuffle in G, involving classic Chicago and West Coast blues elements, with a steady left hand groove and playful right hand phrasing. I’ve used a blend of G minor and G major blues scales (and a touch of D minor blues just before a couple of turnarounds), and Mixolydian elements along with some chromatic lines for colour and variation. The feel leans into that behind-the-beat swing, with melodic ideas drawn from the classic idioms of jump blues and early electric piano styles. The left hand groove follows a boogie woogie style pattern, but with a slower and more lazy, relaxed feel than a lot of the more upbeat boogie woogie styles.

What I am playing here is improvised in the moment, grounded by that traditional shuffle bass pattern in the left hand. The goal was to keep it authentic and expressive, while allowing space for rhythmic surprises and subtle variations in phrasing. As usual, this was recorded in one take.

Thanks for listening.
