What is Modal Improvisation?

Modal improvisation doesn’t have to mean static vamps or endless repetition on one chord. In my approach, each improvisation explores a living harmonic progression within a chosen mode — often weaving between related modal colours such as Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian Flat 6, Lydian, and Lydian Dominant. The result combines modal clarity with emotional and harmonic movement. Below you’ll find my full explanation of this approach along with historical context, and some performances that demonstrate how modal structure can evolve and tell a story.
