Gnossienne No.1 was written by French composer Erik Satie who lived from 1866 to 1925. He wrote six Gnossiennes altogether.
The reason for Satie’s choice of the title Gnossienne remains largely a mystery as he was not forthcoming with any explanations, however it has been speculated that he was either inspired by the Greek myths of Knossos or he was referring to Gnosis, an ancient spiritual movement.
