This piece is called Von Fremden Ländern und Menschen and was written by German pianist, composer and writer Robert Schumann in 1838. The translation of the title is “Of Foreign Lands and Peoples”. This is from a set of thirteen short pieces called Kinderscenen, or Scenes From Childhood.

With its lyrical style and gentle, nostalgic character, this piece is typical of the expressive music of the Romantic era. Although this piece of music is unassuming and understated in contrast to many of the more dramatic and passionate pieces of the Romantic era, it shares many features characteristic of Romantic music. These include the aforementioned lyricism so typical of Romantic music; a dominance of emotional expression over form; sentimentality; and rich harmonies.
